JAN 5 - 5:41 PM EST (20:41 GMT)

According to Coindesk Bitstamp has confirmed that they did in fact have 18,866.55928304 BTC stolen from them. CoFounder Nejc Kodric has released the following statement:

Bitstamp customers can rest assured that their bitcoins held with us as prior to temporary suspension of services on January 5th (at 9am UTC) are completely safe and will be honored in full.

On January 4th, some of Bitstamp’s operational wallets were compromised, resulting in a loss of less than 19,000 BTC. Upon learning of the breach, we immediately notified all customers that they should no longer make deposits to previously issued bitcoin deposit addresses. As an additional security measure, we suspended our systems while we fully investigate the incident and actively engage with law enforcement officials.

This breach represents a small fraction of Bitstamp’s total bitcoin reserves, the overwhelming majority of which are are held in secure offline cold storage systems. We would like to reassure all Bitstamp customers that their balances held prior to our temporary suspension of services will not be affected and will be honored in full.

We appreciate customers’ patience during this disruption of services. We are working to transfer a secure backup of the Bitstamp site onto a new safe environment and will be bringing this online in the coming days. Customers can stay informed via updates on our website, on Twitter (@Bitstamp) and through Bitstamp customer support at support@bitstamp.net.

SPECULATION

Phil Potter from Bitfinex says that he hasn't heard any news of a Bitstamp insolvency in Whaleclub.co chat room. He says that he isn't particularly worried. That Bitstamp is handling the situation exactly as they should by closing down operations while they solve their situation. He is not concerned about the amount of money they may have lost; he thinks whatever the amount taken/lost can be covered by company profits or additional funds from their investors. He also said price may increase in short term due to Bitstamp needing to buy bitcoin to cover the amount taken/lost. He also said that Bitfinex currently has some bitcoin stored on Bitstamp and that he is not worried.

JAN 5 - 4:38 AM EST (9:38 GMT)

Bitstamp released the following tweet. Shut down their entire service and posted the following message on their homepage Bitstamp.net

blockquote class=twitter-tweet data-partner=tweetdeckpBitstamp#39;s services are temporarily suspended. We apologize for the inconvenience. Details: a href=https://t.co/ykn68Wi2wXhttps://t.co/ykn68Wi2wX/a/pmdash; Bitstamp (@Bitstamp) a href=https://twitter.com/Bitstamp/status/552035460873482240January 5, 2015/a/blockquote script async src=//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js charset=utf-8/script

BITSTAMP SERVICE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

We have reason to believe that one of Bitstamp’s operational wallets was compromised on January 4th, 2015. As a security precaution against compromises Bitstamp only maintains a small fraction of customer bitcoins in online systems. Bitstamp maintains more than enough offline reserves to cover the compromised bitcoins.

IN THE MEANTIME, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE DEPOSITS TO PREVIOUSLY ISSUED BITCOIN DEPOSIT ADDRESSES. THEY CANNOT BE HONORED!

Customer deposits made prior to January 5th, 2015 9:00 UTC are fully covered by Bitstamp’s reserves. Deposits made to newly issued addresses provided after January 5th, 2015 9:00 UTC can be honored. Bitstamp takes our security and soundness very seriously. In an excess of caution, we are suspending service as we continue to investigate. We will return to service and amend our security measures as appropriate.

JAN 5 - 2:28 AM EST (7:28 GMT) UNCONFIRMED Bitstamp fiat wire withdrawal just switched to processing on bank's side. Anonymous source with a business account at Bitstamp has told us. Withdrawals by wire appear to be working as usual.

We previously listed an unconfirmed anonymous inside source as saying that Bitstamp lost 5% of their bitcoin reserves. That has proven to be an impersonation:

CoinFire.cf quotes an anonymous Bitstamp employee:

We are working to determine what has gone wrong. The majority of our coins are swept and placed in cold storage often so this shouldn’t be a major issue right now but we are still working to determine the breadth of the issue. This seems to be a server issue and not a compromise but our teams are still investigating.

Our Bitstamp deposit page also shows the reported warning. It is confirmed.

Bitstamp

Bitstamp users received an email notifying them that there is an issue with deposits. Told to not deposit any bitcoin into Bitstamp.

Dear customer,

Today our transaction processing server detected problems with our hot wallet and stopped processing withdrawals.

You should STOP SENDING bitcoin deposits to your Bitstamp account IMMEDIATELY as private keys of your deposit address may be lost.

Your bitcoins already deposited with us are stored in a cold wallet and can not be affected.

We will send you more info as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Bitstamp team
