Bitcoin Product Spotlight: Chain - Augur.net - Swarm.fund

The Bitcoin and digital currency ecosystem is rapidly growing as engineers and designers are building new tools and products everyday. Some are using Bitcoin in novel ways, others are helping to grow adoption, and some are just fun side projects. As a community it is important to recognize this effort and help others find these products. We will showcase some of our favorites every week.

Here are three products we found interesting this week:

Chain - @Chain

Chain

Chain is an application programming interface (API) founded by venture capitalist Adam Ludwin to facilitate the app-building process for bitcoin oriented companies around the world. Available in multiple programming languages, the sleek website provides developers’ apps quick access to the bitcoin blockchain, which provides them with direct bitcoin transaction capabilities as well as access to constantly updated wallet balances. Chain is looking to distinguish itself as a premier bitcoin API, and following a recent $9.5 million Series A round of venture funding, which included investors such as Pantera Capital and Ludwin’s employer RRE Ventures, they’re certainly making a name for themselves.

Augur.net - @AugurProject

Augur.net

Augur.net is a decentralized, prediction-market platform based on Bitcoin Core’s source code. Founded on the principle displayed atop their home page, “Free markets work,” they look to create an efficient futures and derivatives market that rewards accuracy and incentivizes honest prediction-making by simultaneously penalizing incorrectness. Where prediction markets have failed in the past, is heavily influenced by the power of censorship held by regulators as well as the centralized nature of the markets. Augur provides a promising solution to both of these problems through their Bitcoin platform and free market ideals. Simplistically, wagers will work as follows: first, by creating an event, then a market for that event - investors forecast the event by placing actual wagers based on probabilities that will evolve as the market matures. Then once the event happens, depending on the outcome, payouts are made. Augur is really embracing the economic and political spirit of Bitcoin with this product and seem to be onto something big. See their in-depth whitepaper here.

Swarm.fund - @SwarmCorp

Swarm.fund

Swarm.fund is a bitcoin crowdfunding firm located in Palo Alto, California. Comparable to Kickstarter, but funders receive cryptoequity. Swarm empowers the Bitcoin community to fund the startups they like as well as to distribute risk and reward as they see fit. An investee raises money by selling “bits” to their investors in exchange for bitcoins, which themselves may be traded, or received with a premium for early participation in a funding event. Swarm's goal is to stir the democratic mindsets of its users to promote mass-participation in funding opportunities (as a veritable “swarm”) and to create a mutually beneficial relationship where financial reward is companion to building communities.
