Bitcoin Product Spotlight: BlockTrail - Mullvad - OpenBazaar

The Bitcoin and digital currency ecosystem is rapidly growing as engineers and designers are building new tools and products everyday. Some are using Bitcoin in novel ways, others are helping to grow adoption, and some are just fun side projects. As a community it is important to recognize this effort and help others find these products. We will showcase some of our favorites every week.

BlockTrail - @BlockTrail

BlockTrail is a new block explorer that was released by Russian tech entrepreneur Lev Leviev. He is most famous for being co-founder of VKontakte, Russia’s largest social network, which has 266 million user accounts. He sold his stake in VKontakte last year and has since turned his focus to Bitcoin related projects. He created a Bitcoin holding company called BlockCorp, and BlockTrail is its first project. Blocktrail competes with existing blockchain explorers such as and but its design is just a lot nicer on the eyes and easier to understand at a glance. Blocktrail offers the most compelling product, and has leapfrogged the existing competition to become the leader in the space.

Mullvad VPN

Everyone that uses the internet, especially Bitcoin users, should have a reliable and secure VPN that they can trust. Virtual Private Networks essentially create an encrypted tunnel between you and their servers. This prevents your internet provider (usually your cable company) and other undesirable entities from easily looking at all of your internet traffic. Unencrypted internet traffic is extremely easy to intercept, especially if you are using a public WiFi hotspot, essentially you are sending all of your internet traffic as a postcard rather than the enclosed envelope that a secure VPN provides. One major vulnerability of VPN services is that you can possibly identify the user through their payment method. Mullvad sidestepped this by allowing you to pay with Bitcoin without providing an email or any other identifiable information. You pick your desired duration, you pay with Bitcoin, and then you are good to go, with secure internet access for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.

OpenBazaar - @OpenBazaar

OpenBazaar is an open source and community driven project to create a decentralized version of eBay. It aims to be a marketplace with no restrictions, where you can buy anything you want from around the world, without having to pay a middle man a fee. All transactions are done in Bitcoin using a built in escrow system to protect both the buyer and seller. Since OpenBazaar cuts out the middleman, there will be no fees, resulting in lower prices than competing marketplaces and it cannot be censored.
