Bitcoin Product Spotlight: BitRefill - Tox.IM -

The Bitcoin and digital currency ecosystem is rapidly growing as engineers and designers are building new tools and products everyday. Some are using Bitcoin in novel ways, others are helping to grow adoption, and some are just fun side projects. As a community it is important to recognize this effort and help others find these products. We will showcase some of our favorites every week.

Here are three products we found interesting this week:

BitRefill - @BitRefill

Bitrefill is a simple and effective method of topping up a prepaid mobile phone using Bitcoin. Currently, it supports over 400 operators in 113 countries and provides some of the fastest payment confirmations available. Not to mention, the process is very user friendly and provides yet another practical reason for everyday people to be using Bitcoin regularly. First, you select your service provider and check your number’s availability on their homepage. Then following verification you enter your email address and desired recharge amount. You will be directed to a temporary Bitcoin address to which you’ll send your payment and receive confirmation via email, usually within 10 minutes. According to their Twitter page, they were testing a “near-instant” confirmation method this week - so the wait could be shrinking even more in the near future. This is an extremely useful service and one that is conducive to making Bitcoin transactions commonplace; companies like this one will be pivotal to the growth of the Bitcoin economy by both spreading awareness and making the technology approachable to everyday users.

Tox.IM - @ProjectTox

“The NSA - the only government agency that actually listens.” In the wake of the public concern over the integrity of privacy in the Information Age, the demand for encrypted and private online interaction has skyrocketed. Enter This open source online multimedia messaging service allows you to communicate via text, voice, or video all over a distributed peer to peer network instantly and with total privacy. Tox is totally free and doesn’t advertise, but it is still in beta and shouldn’t be treated as a finished project. They’re calling for testers to try it out and report any bugs so they can fix them and get @ProjectTox off and running.

You’re going to hate it.

br /br / is a decentralized and anonymous marketplace where Bitcoin will be traded in exchange for secret information. Information sellers will encrypt and post their valuable secrets on the site “with the ease a user might list an item on Ebay,” and buyers will bid in an auction format for the decryption keys to unlock the data on the site. If a single buyer wins the auction, they alone get the capability to decrypt the files, but if a pool of bidders wins the auction, all Slur users will be able to decrypt them and the data will essentially become public. Any given file may only be auctioned on the site once, therefore Slur expects to see a lot of money change hands when exclusive buyers try to beat out pooled buyers to buy back their stolen information to keep it from leaking. Beta versions will become available starting in 2015, and they plan to have production versions as soon as July. The range of items that could be traded on this kind of marketplace is virtually limitless and potentially destructive - either way, keep your eye on this one it’s sure to stir some controversy before you know it. Seriously, check it out, you’re going to hate it.
